Building governance for the long term
NiteLine has provided a confidential listening and information service for students since 1993. Run by trained student volunteers, its model places volunteers at the centre of both the service and the organisation behind it.
As NiteLine developed, strengthening its governance became an important part of supporting its future. In 2020, the organisation established its first Board of Trustees and began the process of formalising the structures expected of a registered charity.
From informal structures to formal governance
The development of a formal board represented an important change for an organisation with a long history of student led delivery.
Rather than viewing governance as an administrative requirement, NiteLine used the process to establish clearer structures around oversight, responsibility and financial management.
The organisation’s governance journey also demonstrates that good governance is not determined by organisational size. Smaller and volunteer led organisations face many of the same questions around accountability, financial controls, succession and oversight as larger charities.
Recognition and continued development
NiteLine’s governance work received recognition through the Good Governance Awards, demonstrating the progress made in formalising its approach.
What makes the story particularly relevant is that governance was not treated as a single exercise. Building appropriate structures was the beginning of an ongoing process of strengthening how the organisation is governed.
For a service built around volunteers, maintaining that focus provides greater continuity as individual students and volunteers move through the organisation and helps ensure that NiteLine can continue delivering its service responsibly over the long term.
