Building a culture of transparency

Transparency is an important part of building confidence in how an organisation is led and managed.

It goes beyond publishing information. A transparent organisation communicates clearly about its decisions, performance and use of resources, while ensuring that relevant information is available to the people who need it.

Internally, this means providing boards with the information required to exercise effective oversight and make informed decisions. Externally, it means communicating openly and appropriately with stakeholders about the organisation’s activities, progress and challenges.

Transparency also depends on consistency. It should form part of everyday governance and communication rather than becoming something considered only when information is requested or reports are due.

Organisations can strengthen transparency by reviewing how information is recorded, shared and communicated, and by considering whether stakeholders have a clear understanding of how the organisation operates.

When transparency becomes part of organisational culture, it can strengthen accountability, support better decision-making and help build lasting trust.
